A house, down in the valley, only the roof is visible. It’s hidden, but still there. This tends to happen with a lot of things, especially painful ones. Something is off, you can feel it, but often it’s easier to suppress the unpleasant.
In my video »When The Peonies Bloom« I disclose traces of violence, and how they appear. I describe the landscape of my home in Upper Austria and what I find there: remains of war and repressed women. I locate stories that happened a long time ago and think about what has changed. Violence stays everpresent. Patriarchal structures underlie everything and I illustrate how it can have an impact on a personal level, for example through hate against one’s own body.
I can’t escape those feelings and thoughts, just as other female presenting people: This inability to break free is part of our lives and of my work. In the framework of a videoessay I tell about my family history, image production, traditions, from the loss of seasons and connect it with feministic theory. What is being told passes by like a flow of consciousness. Lightheartedness doesn’t seem to gain entree. It’s summer, but melancholy is also a part of the images.
